4 October 2017: KAP Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter has applauded the Cloncurry and Mount Isa Shire Councils, and KAP State MP Robbie Katter for securing almost $6m in Federal funding to deliver upgrades on the Carl Katter Bridge in Cloncurry and the Isa Street Bridge in Mount Isa.
Mr Katter labelled the $2.47m upgrades in Cloncurry and $3.5m upgrade in Mount Isa as essential to the operations of both towns.
“This is a great win for the ‘Curry and the ‘Isa. Those upgrades are badly needed.
“I applaud those involved, Robbie Katter and others, who secured the funding.”
Mr Katter said that the Carl Katter Bridge in Cloncurry was named after his grandfather, but that the reason for the naming had become distorted over the years.
“The reason for naming the bridge after grandfather was a bit of comic humor. It wasn’t named after him for any distinguished service; even through is served on the Council for many years as a Councillor.
“Cloncurry was very involved in the bicycle racing which was huge in those days between the towns before motor cars came in.
“But that bridge was not named for those reasons. Unfortunately grandfather didn’t drink. But on one of the two odd occasions which he did, he missed the bridge and rolled the car and they said they’d name the bridge after him.”
