Saluting Their Service
2017-05-04

4 May 2017: KAP Member for Kennedy, Bob Katter is proud that Yungaburra has received close to $10,000 in funding, to commemorate Australia’s military history.

The Afghanistan Avenue of Honour, on the Tinaburra Peninsula at Yungaburra will receive $9,804 under the Federal Government’s Saluting Their Service grants program to install interpretative signage at the site.

“Our soldiers are loyal to their country and we need to respect and honour those men and women who fight for us,” Mr Katter said today.

“The Afghanistan Avenue of Honour at Yungaburra serves to remind us of what these men and women have endured to protect our country and our way of life. We need to respect our soldiers and what they have done for us. The interpretative signage at the site will help to ensure everyone understands the sacrifice of our soldiers.

“My grandad’s brother died in Gallipoli. He went to Gallipoli because he was loyal to his country.

“His country said he had to go over, so he did and he died. That’s what the avenue is all about – honouring those that gave the ultimate sacrifice in a more recent conflict.

“The people who got the Afghanistan Avenue of Honour up and going have done a great service to North Queensland.
