As Queensland Day approaches on Saturday 6 June, KAP Leader and Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter renewed his calls for a separate State of North Queensland, and failing that, separate administration for the north of the State.
“I will be having discussions with the three Northern Amigos – Billy Gordon, Shane Knuth and Robbie Katter – that the administrations of North Queensland be moved to North Queensland.
“We want to move to a Scotland type self-management arrangement.
“It’s constitutionally difficult to get through the barriers to a separate state completely, so self-management would be the next best thing.
“We’ve got a quarter of the population of Queensland, so we want a quarter of the monetary allocation and for it to be entirely under North Queensland administration.
“They’ve spent $20,000 million on tunnels in Brisbane and all we’ve got is seven overpasses in North Queensland, when we have roughly the same population.
“And that’s just one of the examples of the ridiculous imbalance.
“We have no baseload power in North Queensland, so we can have no industry.
“We’ve got more than half of Australia’s entire water run-off, but we haven’t built a dam in 30 years.
“It’s time that North Queensland got control of its own destiny,” Mr Katter said.
