Dear Editor,

Australia Post is a national Australian identity. It stands alongside the likes of Qantas and Telstra in brand projection, capture and recognition.

These brands; these giant national carriers should but don’t always have the best interests of the people at heart. Whether it be the obscene, sickening salaries of their CEOs, or harvesting jobs without any regard for the regional and rural communities that consider these services equivalent to an “essential” or “emergency” service, time and again communities have felt let-down or abandoned.

I have written to the PM, the DPM, and the Minister for Communications urging them to object to and squash the rumours that up to 25 per cent of postal worker jobs will be cut in the proposed restructure which we understand will be delivered under the guise of the temporary changes handed down by the Government on the 21st of April.

Australia Post’s spokesperson, Tim Whittaker, in April, said that the service had been “inundated” with the increase of parcels in April and that the service was recruiting 600 casual workers to keep up with the demand.

Using the pandemic to slash one in four positions at Australia Post will do untold damage to the people of Australia, particularly in rural and regional parts of the country, who are understandably angry at these potential job losses and the further disruption to their livelihoods.

The Government is already being blamed for overkill on COVID-19 restrictions and needs to put a stop to any further cuts to Australia Post.

God bless,

Hon Bob Katter
Federal Member for Kennedy
