KAP Leader and Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter said that naming a bridge on the Townsville Port Access Road after the late and great John McIntyre is the perfect way to honour his significant contribution to infrastructure and development of North and North-West Queensland.
Mr Katter supported AECOM’s submission to name the bridge after John McIntyre in 2011, confirming his support in a letter to the Minister for Main Roads, Fisheries and Marine Infrastructure.
"I knew John very well and was involved with him on many projects in my electorate – roads, bridges, the Bradfield Scheme, the Hughenden and Cloncurry water schemes as well as one of North West Queensland major developments, the Lake Julius Dam in Mount Isa.
"John was passionate about the bush and it was his vision and foresight which was responsible for much of the infrastructure towns in my electorate enjoy today.
"He was committed to North and North-West Queensland and was passionate in his endeavours to see that this great region of Queensland had infrastructure to enable it to prosper.
"For over 40 years John Mac was dedicated to his community and his commitment to engineering has been formally recognised by the number of honours bestowed upon him over the years.
"It’s a great day for the people of this area to see this bridge named after such an outstanding Australian. This bridge is sure to become a great hallmark of the region," said Mr Katter.
