KAP Leader and Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter has recognised the Government’s funding commitment to widen the Southern Access Corridor into Cairns, but maintains he will continue to fight for a second eastern corridor.

Work funded in the announcement includes widening the Cairns Southern Access Corridor between Robert Road and Foster Road, widening the Bruce Highway between Robert Road and Mulgrave Road / Ray Jones Drive from four to six lanes.

“This is extraordinarily good news. We have been fighting for this for years. The Federal Government has been very generous indeed here. We are greatly appreciative to the Prime Minister and Minister Anthony Albanese.

“We would like to thank in particular Secretary of Edmonton District Traders Association Fran Lindsay, Vice-President Edmonton District Traders Association Peter Piccone, President Edmonton District Traders Association Phillip Ungerer and President Mulgrave and District Chamber of Commerce Inc Brett Moller who have been the driving force of this project.

“It has been a great privilege working with this wonderful group,” Mr Katter said.

“Once again we thank all our communities and people that have done a terrific job in securing this funding and commitment.

“When I became Federal Member for the southern access into Cairns (Gordonvale, Edmonton region), this was one of our major priorities.

“The delays along the Bruce Highway, disrupts tourism and local business on a massive scale.

“We are still determined this year to reserve and resume land for that alternative eastern corridor. This is among one of our highest priorities.

We will continue to fight like tigers to ensure there is a second access into Cairns,” Mr Katter said.
