Department of Veteran Affairs does not own ANZAC Day
2012-04-23

KATTER’S Australian Party Federal Leader Bob Katter has lashed out at the Federal Government for spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on consultants to tell Australians how to celebrate the centenary of ANZAC Day.

"It is humiliating that tax‐payers had to pay for this Report and is yet another example of the "Freedom‐Reapers" making us feel guilty for what we have traditionally done as Australians," said Mr Katter.

Mr Katter has written to the Federal Minister for Veteran Affairs, the Hon Warren Snowdon MP demanding a public apology.

"The commissioning of this report is un‐Australian and an attack on our national identity.

"This is a sacred commemoration and Australians should be given the opportunity to celebrate the centenary of the landing at Gallipoli as they wish. We should be honouring those who died in the service of their country and returned servicemen and women," he said.

Mr Katter said this is a day for veterans and their families and for the general public to acknowledge the sacrifices Australians have made and continue to make for our country.

"Bureaucrats should not be dictating or investigating how Australians should be celebrating our own nationality.

"The Department of Veteran Affairs does not own ANZAC Day; it lives in the memory of those who served, and their descendents, for which I am one," Mr Katter said.
