THE iconic Akubra favoured by Australian Party leader Bob Katter will go under the hammer in a bid to get a North Qld community a gymnasium.
The Federal Member for Kennedy has donated his Akubra Arena to the Millaa Millaa Lions Club, which plans to auction it off via online site EBay as well as at an event in the township during centenary celebrations on September 24.
Pondering the sudden public demand for the Akubra, Mr Katter recalled a time "back in my days in the pub" when he was arguably better known for ‘shouting’ a round of drinks.
"Back then there were those that would not shout if a shark bit them," he joked.
"But you’ve got to hand it to that Millaa Millaa mob – they got the local constabulary on to me!"
In handing over the Akubra to Millaa Millaa Lions member and Senior Constable Paul Jackson, Mr Katter reflected on almost four decades as a Lion himself – about the same amount of time as he has served as a Member of Parliament.
"Unfortunately they thought I said I was lyin’, not a Lion," he laughed.
Mr Katter wished the club the best of luck in obtaining a good price for the Akubra, pointing out that one of his hats had fetched almost $3000 at a recent auction.
