AUSTRALIAN Party Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter today set up shop with Independent South Australian Senator Nick Xenophon in an Adelaide mall in a bid to shame governments and supermarket giants into giving Aussie farmers and customers a fair go.

The pair set up a fruit and vegetable stall outside a Woolworths store to show how farmers are being fleeced and customers conned, prior to introducing proposed legislation in both houses of Parliament that will force supermarkets to display the price they pay at the farmgate alongside the retail price.

Mr Katter said that since deregulation, governments had "stood idly by and had inquiry after inquiry to detour the criticism and make it look like they’re doing something".

"They have stood by and facilitated the growth of Woolworths and Coles from 55 per cent of market share in 1991 to about 90 per cent now," he said.

"They have done nothing except trumpet the benefits of a free market – yeah, free for the supermarket giants to charge customers what they like and pay farmers what they like. That’s what free market really means.

"Well we’re going to expose them, and this latest ominous poll result in Queensland is saying that people have had enough.

"They know the major parties are there to line the pockets of the big corporations and the slithering Sydney suits. Well, Mr and Mrs ALP and LNP, people are yarding you now – and you deserve to be yarded.

"We can’t attack Woolworths and Coles if they’re legally allowed to do what they’re doing, but we can attack those who facilitate it."
