Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter together with KAP State Member for Hinchinbrook Nick Dametto MP and Townsville taxi licence owners Kevin Duve and Darren Morse, are calling on the State Transport Minister Mark Bailey to meet with taxi licence owners and negotiate a fair outcome.
Mr Dametto said, “I’ve written to Minister Bailey on behalf of Taxi Licence owners in my electorate and requested he has a ‘without prejudice’ meeting with impacted licence owners to negotiate a fair outcome”.
“These people have lost everything. They invested in good faith, with the comfort of knowing the State Government had regulated the industry for decades,” said Mr Dametto.
Mr Katter warned that other industries could be next.
“What’s to stop the government just ignoring its own legislation and regulation on pharmacies, the building industry or pubs and clubs? If it happened to taxis, it could happen to other industries.
“Our society and economy has regulation to ensure safe and fair practices to look after the public, but also Queensland small businesses. Then overnight, this is destroyed because a foreign-multinational wants to come in and erode safety, pay, conditions and flout our rules.
Taxi Licence owner Kevin Duve, has requested a meeting with his local State Member Les Walker and said, “all we are asking for is a fair go”.
“We all paid stamp duty to the state, higher registration and licensing fees and complied with their legislation. We are not against rideshare, we are simply saying that if you void the legislation and allow others into the industry by breaking the law, pay compensation to those impacted,” said Mr Duve.
Townsville taxi licence owner Darren Morse paid $475,000 for his licence in December 2014 and it was the last and only licence to sell in the Townsville area between rideshare being introduced and 2020.
Since the introduction of rideshare, licence values have plummeted in Townsville – with the most recent sale of a licence in Townsville in 2020 being sold at $20,000.
“My $475,000 licence is now worth $20,000 in the space of seven years. I’m paying off a loan on an asset which is almost worthless,” said Mr Morse.
“All we are asking for is a fair go and for Minister Bailey to show some compassion to mum and dad small business owners and meet with us,” said Darren and Kevin.
